According to this historic article a death ray machine was created in Cleveland, OH in 1934. This death ray apparently had the capability of killing things with frightening efficiency "turning blood to water." Witnesses to demonstrations of the machine are said to have seen it kill dogs, cats, and rabbits instantly when the ray was directed at them.
